How to take a photo on Mac and make it look good before you share it

Mac's built-in camera was made for video calls, not portrait. But with the right apps after the shot, it doesn't really matter.

Step-by-step process

Step 1

Open Capto, choose a capture option from the toolbar, and take the shot. The image lands straight in Capto's library without cluttering the desktop.

Step 2

Crop, annotate, or adjust the image directly in Capto's editor before exporting.

Step 3

Open the photo in TouchRetouch and use the brush tool to erase unwanted objects, shadows, or background distractions — works with JPG, PNG, TIFF, and RAW files.

Step 4

For profile shots, portfolio images, or anything going to a public audience, open the file in Luminar Neo and use the AI tools to retouch skin, adjust lighting, and add depth.

Step 5

Save the final image from Luminar Neo or Capto in the right format and share via AirDrop, email, or directly to the Photos app — no extra steps needed.
