How to remove malware from Mac and keep it from coming back

Macs aren't immune — they're just less targeted. When something does get through, knowing exactly where to look makes the difference between a five-minute fix and a full reinstall.

Step-by-step process

Step 1

Open CleanMyMac, go to Protection > Malware Removal, and click Scan. It identifies threats and presents a clean list of suspicious items to remove in seconds.

Step 2

Go to CleanMyMac's Optimization module and review all login items including LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons — disable or remove anything suspicious that wouldn't appear in System Settings.

Step 3

Use CleanMyMac's Uninstaller to remove unknown or unused apps completely — including the hidden cache and support files that dragging to Trash leaves behind.

Step 4

Open Chrome, Safari, or Firefox settings and review installed extensions — remove anything unfamiliar, since browser extensions are one of the most common places malware hides and operates.

Step 5

Turn on ClearVPN before browsing to mask the IP address and encrypt all outgoing data — prevents the kind of network-level attacks that bypass Mac's built-in security entirely.

Step 6

Open Step Two and set up TOTP codes for email, banking, and any account that was active during the infection — a second factor stops attackers even if a password was compromised.
