Free up scratch disk space on Mac and fix “scratch disk full” problems

I built my own quick workflow to free up scratch disk space — pinpoint the clutter, remove temp files, and keep things running smoothly with Setapp tools and simple macOS steps.

Step-by-step process

Step 1

Open About This Mac → Storage to see how much free space you have and confirm any “scratch disk” warnings

Step 2

Open CleanMyMac X, run Space Lens or System Junk, and remove unnecessary files taking up space

Step 3

Purge Photoshop cache (if you use Photoshop). With Photoshop open, choose Edit → Purge → All to clear its internal cache and free up space within the app

Step 4

After cleanup, restart your Mac and check storage again. Your scratch disk area should now have more room, and scratch errors should decrease
